Hello daily viewers, those of you that have continued to check up on the blog weekly, thank you. You have more patience than I do and I am forever grateful for that. For my new viewers, please, try and have some faith in me. I WILL be on more. Ive found a place I love to write in and a city that gets the juices flowing. There are a lot of interesting things happening in my life and some great opportunities coming up in the future. I would love to be able to share these adventures with all of you, maybe it will even inspire you to take some risks of your own. I am planning on being completely real and honest with this site. I will write things as they come to be and I will update new experiences as soon as they happen, I just won't use names ;). If your a high school student that can't wait to come to uni or a college student that never got to leave home my hope is that you can live vicariously through me. Now that that's out of the way lets get on with the first post of 2017: A day in my life. A series you will see constantly on this page. WARNING: DO NOT be fooled by the glitz and the glam of the city. We are just as broke, stressed and bored as most college students. We just dress better and have pretty buildings. Wait, that sounded shallow. But for the sake of transparency I'm going to leave it in here. Hopefully throughout this shadowing you can get to know me a little bit better, understand my style of humor and maybe even be persuaded to continue coming back... Just maybe. This was one of my more boring days of school, there were no events for me to manage, only one hour long class that I had to attend and I don't start work at my new job for another week. However, the free time did lend to some creativity. Writing this blog post for example is a direct reaction to my last completely free weekday for the month.
10:50- Class time. My class starts at 11AM and I am ALWAYS late without fail. I didn't even do my makeup and breakfast was scant and barely filling. Yet and still I was still exactly 10 minutes late to my GEOG 112K lecture much to my overaly strict professors chagrin. To make matters worse the lecture is always extremly boring (he's a nice guy though!) and he gives "POP" quizzes on the lectures every Thursday. I have yet to achieve above a C+ on any of these particular quizzes. 12:15- Class lets out. Thank the gods class is over! Now I had to pee. (TMI... I don't care) Problem was, I'd never used the bathroom in the ultra extravagant glass science complex. The guard directed me around a corner hallway I had never noticed and voila there the bathrooms were and also a beautiful courtyard i'm certain no one knows of. Maybe ill study there next time. 12:30 ....Walking? A quick walk past the sports arena and through library plaza (which was more packed than usual, i wonder what was going on?) led me to the bus stop which left without me. *Tears*. I caught the next one though! So score for me! The buses are actually quite funny! They take forever to drive off the curb when you have an important class to catch and then leave with only 5 people in them when it's raining and your drenched. Same girl....same. Also, look at my fancy tea! I got said fancy tea from this super hip ultra delicious Ramen shop down in Ponce City Market! If you live in the Atlanta area you HAVE to eat here. Ill link a map view. 12:40- Grabbing food and being confused. I made a quick and very incognito dash into the dining hall to grab a muffin and a banana and BAM! I felt like i had just walked into The Dave Dameshek Football Program. Holy smokes it was loud but also very interesting. Hmm, now that i think of it I have yet to look at any of the basketball programs they were handing out. Maybe I should up my school sports spirit. GSU just isn't the sportiest place, what can I say LOL. I didn't come here for that! I came here for my edumacation. That, and the awesome job opportunities at state. But I digress, back to our regularly scheduled programing. 1:00-3:30- Total Bullshit and Youtube (AKA Life) I'm not sure what I was doing to take up this much time, I didn't even go to sleep. I simply at a muffin and a banana and watched CoffeeBreakWithDani on Youtube. OH! Now I remember, I did my makeup! Yea, I know thats a long time for makeup. But the art and act of doing makeup is a very soothing creative process even when your doing something as simple and natural as I did today. Besides, was feeling kinda crumby and strange and I'm breaking out- all due to my monthly, so the makeup was a good pick me up. 3:40- Starbucks Man it feels good to be back here! A new and beautiful starbucks just opened up on campus right across from the arts and science center. Now, im usually very skeptical of starbucks seeing as the whole concept of the company is built on highway robbery and mediocre coffee. Not to mention, I live in a city FULL of beautiful quaint coffee shops and interesting turkish coffe, What reason do I have for a Starbucks. Thats what I though anyway until my best friend Jada convinced me to try out the "Pink Drink." Oh man, that stuff is good! (If you've been living under a rock and don't know what the Starbucks pink drink is I've inserted a picture of mine and linked it to a recipe.) The best part about this particular Starbucks is that they offer a student discount to ALL GSU students! It's not a small discount either its an entire 20% off discount which can mean the difference between a grande and a venti for a young broke girl like me. 4:00- GUYS GUYS! As I write this the cutest guy just asked if he could sit with me! He has beautifuly exotic middle eastern looks! I can't! I just can't! But *sigh* I will not do anything to pursue this seemigly mutual attraction. Though he is a student, I can tell he's minimum 25 and this 18 year old has not business coercing a grown man into my clutched. It just wouldn't be good for my health. 4:10- I trust hot guy with my stuff I know, I know. This was really stupid and irresponsible but this Starbucks is packed and I was hungry and I could in no way risk someone else stealing my stellar seat.
6:30- Time to hit the gym. And alas, though my time at starbucks was absolutely delighting it's time for me to go home, Iv'e promised my friend we could go to the gym @7 before I leave Uni for the weekend. I don't really feel like going but Iv'e got 1 month to get in my best physical shape for spring break in Miami!!! I didn't think I would enjoy writing and working here as much as I did but the noise was surprisingly easy to block out. I think I've found my new place. Because lets be honest, i'll probably be back first thing monday morning. Possibly even Sunday if I feel like getting some very necessary work done for my online class. 7PM- Gym Time. SO.... I went to the gym but I forgot to take a picture! Silly me! sorry guys! But what I can tell you is that those workouts that Blogalaties does on Youtube are something SERIOUS! Okay! Like I was working muscles I never knew I had. Im almost there to my Miami body goal! woot woot! You guys should check out her youtube page and other online workouts! You do NOT need a trainer to get in shape! 9:30- Home and Sleep.
My mother came and saved me from the clutches of college (jk I love it there). But, I do really enjoy going home for the weekend whenever I get the time which is usually every few months. I miss my dog a crraazzyy amount while I'm gone so it feels good to be with my little baby again! That's him down below! Ah reunited and it feels so good! Well guys, this is where my daily story ends. I'm so thankful to anyone that has made it this far! NEW, exciting, opinionated and hopefully informational or helpful content to come! I hope you have a great rest of your week and that your feeling good! If you live in GA: GO FALCONS! Even though we lost I'm proud of how far we came! (what did you guys do for the super bowl?). Now, I am not going to attack any of the students involved with the theme of this party, because realistically from an obtuse angle it sounds like an equally fun and satirical idea for a party to mock one of Hollywood's biggest icons (and eyesores). So, no I am not angered by the theme or even the Sorority and Fraternity in question. That being said, there has to be a level of judgment when assessing how easily something can turn offensive or even get twisted around to sound offensive to other groups of people. For example, throwing a Hitler themed party sounds pretty hilarious until someone shows up with a swastika and the Jewish student union and possibly the nation of Israel is on your back. Regarding the claims of blackface there has been no known evidence surfaced to say that actions of that kind actually took place. But that is not to say it isn't being carefully hidden. UCLA as a whole is under some heat for having a shocking number of discriminatory events happen to the school in the past 5 years. Students are becoming increasingly frustrated with the challenges they are facing at what is thought to be a pretty liberal and diverse school. So what now? Well, its not time to point the finger, to blame an entire group of people or to separate yourself in an act of self preservation. It is time more than ever to establish a basic line of communication across all campuses throughout different social and ethnic circles.
The back lash from the Black student organization's that came just hours after this party shows that there was already a tense relationship between the two groups. College does not have to be completely separate, schools do not have to be divided. We spend so much time concerned about what we have in common with small groups of people that we miss the similarities between the hundreds you stand next to each day. It is easy to be mad and point the finger at anything we may take offense to. But we must own up to the fact that as students we tend to segregate ourselves a lot with clubs, organizations and sometimes entire dormitories. You will never have the complete respect and understanding of someone you don't know or even take the time to know nor can you expect them to care. While I am not angry at the UCLA's Sigma Phi Epsilon I do acknowledge the fact that I was not there and I cannot feel the same emotion as those that were present. But from where I am sitting I forgive them, we all make mistakes, the real test is weather or not you learn from it. Selenas Confession: It's no secret, the media are blood sucking jerks that will say just about anything to increase ratings. But this week Selena Gomez gave us all something to be ashamed of: How easy we tend to believe them. On an interview with billboard the Actor turned singer then actor again revealed that during her time in "rehab" she was actually going through intensive chemotherapy for Lupus, "I was diagnosed with Lupus, and I've been through chemotherapy. I could've had a stroke. I wanted so badly to say: 'You guys have no idea. I'm in chemotherapy. You're assholes." Explained Selena when asked about her "break". While the public was just fine with slandering her name and accusing her of needing drug rehabilitation following a harsh breakup with a certain Canadian singer the poor 22 year old was incredibly I'll and in need of support. In the interview she says "The craziest thing about the media is that is causes us to gain a feeling of intitlement in regards to our knowledge of certain people's personal lives. If Selena did not wish to broadcast her unfortunate diagnoses of a terrible illness she doesn't have to. It's not HER fault if you decided to assume she was a drug attict. Selna let some of her anger out on the interview saying "It’s awful walking into a restaurant and having the whole room look at you, knowing what they’re saying. I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again.” AND "I'm so fucking nice to everybody and everyone is so vile to me. I've been working since I was seven. I've been a UNICEF ambassador since I was 17. It's so disappointing that I've become a tabloid story." And don't even let me get started on that gorgeous picture she posted of her self smiling by the pool that was titled "Fat and hideous" by many social media users."I was in a bikini and got publicly ripped for being overweight," Other posts coming soon xo
I'm really sorry. To whomever is reading, watching, following even retweeting this. I let is get to me: the stress of high school friends and life. Instead of using that to make entertaining and brilliant blog post I let it stop me. I got lazy. And because of that I haven't posted a new blog in over a month. To those of you that have been actively checking the sight, believing in me. Don't think I have forgotten about you. Success is relative and to see that even 50 people have returned to check in on the progress of this blog is monumental in my eyes. So thank you so much for your support. I will not let you down again. New blog posts to come in the next week. No matter what. xo
Be Happy: Yes, im being serious. This is the most important key to having a successful work and school relationship. Get a job doing something you actually enjoy doing. It is possible to daydream about going to work while your in school (I do it all the time). If you enjoy what you are doing you have a higher chance of showing up on time everyday, not to mention possible pay raises for high performance efforts. High School students tend to have extremely high turn over rates in the workplace. This is mainly because we usually just take what we can get. Try going against the grain and your nagging parents. Be a little picky and wait it out. An amazing opportunity might be just around the corner but you've already sold yourself short with a job at the local supermarket which you HATE. It's Okay To Be Picky! Chose Local: Seriously guys, location, location, location! The word commute should mean nothing to a student. You will always dread going to work if you have to drive more than 10 minutes to get there (I have a 5 min ride to work as it is now with no turns or lights). As a student your schedule is very sporadic. Group projects and afterschool activities can seem to pop out of mid air. If you work close to school or at least close to home you can spend more time in the moment rather then watching a clock and calculating the fastest route to work. It's an amazing thing to be able to get off of work at 7 and be home by 7:10 the latest. Less Than 10 Minutes Away! Skip the Weekends/ Work Study: Most students are going to work on the weekends which really limits the amount of jobs available for you. When an employee hears that a student is available for a weekday afternoon shift it almost doubles your chances of getting hired for small desk or storefront jobs. If you have the time, try and get a job during the weekdays either after school or during it with a work-study or work-education program! This way you're finished with your work day around 6, leaving you enough time to do your homework, have your weekends free and possibly make more money than the average high school student. Go Against the Grain! Work With People You Know: I know as a high school student this is usually one of the things we try to avoid doing when looking for a job but trust me if you find a workplace that has also employs people you ENJOY knowing the work day will always be a little fun for you even when it gets stressful. Working for people you know can also mean more flexibility in your schedule. If you take a job under somebody you have known for years they are likely to be a little more forgiving about that last minute band concert rehearsal you missed work for the other day. They are also for the most part genuinely interested in your school and work day, your schedule and your likes and dislikes and will tend to treat you with more respect and trust right off the bat. MAKE A SCHEDULE: Most important on the list: make the schedule, know the schedule, live the schedule! I promise you guys make schedule/lists and plan for EVERYTHING! Keep that schedule on multiple different platforms weather it be an agenda, your phone, your hand or a calendar whiteboard. Become obsessed with that schedule and STICK TO IT! Make everyone around you aware of that schedule too! Especially your employer. My director/ mentor is even aware of my GYM schedule. It is important that they are almost never surprised by you need to leave early or take time off. Talk to your teachers about upcoming projects and schedule time out for meeting and clubs that can also harmonize with your work schedule and be sure to tell your employers about all of these and find a sub to cover your shift. Make the Schedule, Know the Schedule, Live the Schedule! Live A Little
Last but not least, remember to have a life. I'm not joking, If it's your senior year you need to live it up and also remember to relax. Life is going to get very stressful many time throughout this year and you need to be prepared for that by not making work apart of that stress. Remember to plan ahead early so you can live in the moment. Focus on one task at a time. Don't think about work until that last bell rings and don't think about school until you clock out of work. Remember to enjoy yourself and fill the year with smiles and laughter, It will likely be the last year you see many faces you took for granted and it will go by fast no matter how slow it seems now. Have fun, focus and make memories that will last a life time. Articles on this topic have been popping up a lot lately so I thought it was about time I said my piece.
Let me give you a scenario: A woman walked into a bathroom to find another woman on the phone engaged in a heated conversation. She wanted to leave to find an emptier bathroom but this was the closest one and she really needs to wash her hands. She does so while mumbling "sorry, sorry, sorry" then exits quickly. What's wrong with this picture? Well first of all it's a PUBLIC bathroom, a PUBLIC space that is not owned by the idviduals that use it. Furthermore, it is the woman inside the restroom that should have said sorry and found a more suitable space to have a conversation. As women we get into scenarios like this on a daily basis; weather its using the office microwave before someone else, speaking to someone who was "working", walking in between people who take up to much space, visiting your professor during office hours, coughing, chewing, crunching, sneezing, clicking a pen and even BREATHING. You name it and we've probably apologized for it. Why do we constanly apologize for existing in a space that happens to be occupied by other people? Think about the last time you heard a man apologize for sneezing or coughing. That's right, it never happens. Now now, I do not want to make this a men vs women situation because in truth I don't think men would care or even notice if we stopped apologizing for everything. INFACT I think it would help many relationships. By apologizing for small things women are discrediting the meaning behind their honest apologies. Saying sorry is supposed to be followed by ACTION, action put in place to insure that you do not make the same "mistake" over again. Well, washing your hands, warming up food, asking a question, visiting your professor and sneezing ARE NOT mistakes. Therefore an apology should not follow. If you are wondering why we have such a strong need to say sorry for any distruption we may cause I have a theory: Politeness. A woman's politeness is one of her more delicate, sutable and attractive charecteristics and men generally drift towards polite women. Being confrontational usually puts a woman outside of her comfort zone and makes those awkward monets tense. For instance in the microwave scenario saying sorry allows those first few awakrd momnents and thoughts of annoyance and impatience to pass by quicker and causes the person waiting to offer some type of consolidation such as "That's alright." or "Its fine." which in turn gives you YOUR piece of mind. So there you have it: women apologize more for self profit then politeness! Nevertheless, saying sorry for existing makes women appear weak, unsure of our self and our decisions which we are NOT. So the next time you cough, sneeze, cry or laugh loudly in the middle of class try not to apologize because, are you really even sorry? I would love to hear your thoughts and opinions!xx Over the summer I had the opportunity to go work with my uncle who happens to be the director of admissions at Monroe college. And take it from those people are BUSY but they get their work done in some very creative ways. Here are just a few of the things I learned on my trip. More to come later enjoy!
1. High school seniors stress to much about the future: There has never been a truer statement than this. We're constantly stressing about the future so much that we let the present skate by us. Now I understand is not completely our fault because the schools we are taught and raised in only ever talk about the future. How many times have you heard the phrase "Well, in college..." from one of your teachers. 2.Diversity means different things to different people: I am looking for a truly diverse campus where no race is exceedingly bigger than the other. However, most college campuses will base their diversity off of the NUMBER of nationalities represented. NOT their percentages. 3.A city campus is still a campus: There happens to be this weird notion that a city campus is not a "campus" when in fact it is! City campuses are still loaded with building ONLY students can access. And you are not in any higher risk of danger by going to a city campus rather than a suburban campus. In fact city campuses have even higher security detail to give students a piece of mind. 4.Competition is steeper than ever : It is important to remember that you are competing with kids from all over the world to get into school. Even if you just applying to small state schools it is never okay to let you guard down. I will be honest here, this notion both amazes and frustrates me. On one hand it is amazing that our schools are so good that people come far and wide to study full time here. But on the other hand I now have to compete with the WORLDS children for placement in a STATE school in MY state. 5.Your essay will be read, word for word. Yes, I know amazing right they actually read the essay. So make it unique. Refrain from usuing generic essays at all cost, college admissions directors can smell a generic esay from a mile away. A generic essay says you are not commited or even really interested in this college on and individual level but I promise there re 1,000s of other kids that are. 6.Don't be afraid to leave home: Pick a city that speaks to you and your future career. The best job opputrnities and networking options start with your college. Take out an annoying middle man by going to school where you want to work some day. 7.Your High School transcript will never disappear: Make no mistake they do not burn your high school transrpit. Your transcript and ESPECIALLY senior year grades will be used to determine your elegibility for abroad trips and internship oppurtunties if you chose to take part in those freshman or sophomore year. Your high school transcript will also be used for transfer admissions if you choose to switch schools. DONT SLACK NOW. 8.Coed dormitories are the new black: COED dorms are very popular now. It will do you a load of good to get used to that idea going into room assignments so you not limit your options. In certain schools you cannot get a suite style bedroom if you don't comfortable with a coed floor 9.Social media is your friend: If your social media is a fun, mature and ladylike representation of who you are then congrats! You just gained a powerful ally in the college admissions process! If you really want a school to notice you try adding a small hashtag to the bottom of your pictures and eventually someone will make the connection. Ex: #PantherBound 10.Social Media can be your enemy: If there is ONE thing I could stress is PLEASE CLEAN UP your social media pages before you even THINK about applying to a university! They do check! and they will see every sordid thing you ever did! 11.You are always being compared: You are compared to others in your school your county and overall your state. Most colleges use a tool called SchoolDigger.com Being in a good school a hard school does not excuse a low GPA in fact it's quite the opposite. 12.If you can get one interviews are saving saving grace: INTERVIEW INTERVIEW INTERVIEW. When you go in for an interview you are no longer asset of social security numbers on a page, you are a person, a smile, a personality. If you have a unique presence an interview can only be positive in your admissions process. 13.Be Fearles: Don't be afraid to apply to Your reach school. In fact don't be afraid to apply to many reach schools stranger things have happened and someone else will get your spot if you never try 14.Sell Yourself: A modest application is a boring application. Colleges may be big but they're not as big as their applications stacks. You need to show them why they need you 15.Think about your major: If you can declare your major and a program you are interested in please do. It shows colleges that you will never become a waste of space because you already know what you're doing and where you're going. 16.Do NOT mess up Senior Year: Do everything you possibly can in your senior year get an internship, volunteer, get a job, join a few clubs or even start one of your own, 17.GET A JOB: A job is a great selling point for a college admissions office because it's shows discipline. Try to keep the same job all year. Stick it out and refrain from quiiting even if Forever 21 is hiring again. Work hard and that will be your best recommendation letter yet Leave a comment down below :) College tours can be very exciting but the collegete atmosphere and crowd of peole you don't know can be very intimidating as well. However its important that you don't waste any opportunities on your tour due to fear and anxiety. These tips can help remind you to put away the insecurities and let your confidence shine through!
There comes an awkward period in high school where as a child you become too expensive for anyone to pay for. Allowance is not cutting it, your parents won’t pay for your gas money and you don't have enough to hang out with your friends. This usually means that it’s time to get a job. Unfortunately, in high school it seems like an almost impossible feat. Here are some basic reasons your efforts may fail and solutions to those problems.
